Research, policy, and advocacy

We carry out in-depth research on human rights issues in Asia and use these insights to advocate for policy change. We reach out to key stakeholders to ensure our research is evidence based and publish our findings to ensure human rights issues are raised at the international stage through engaging in regular human rights reviews by the UN including the Universal Periodic Review.

What is the UN’s
Universal Periodic Review?

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a human rights review through which each United Nations member state is scrutinised every 4.5 years.

The UPR aims to promote universal human rights standards and engage each country in a dialogue about their human rights record, encouraging them to reflect on what they have achieved and what more can be done.

It is designed to better promote and protect human rights on the ground. Each state receives recommendations from other states and has an opportunity to explain what actions they have taken to improve human rights in their country. Civil society organisations can participate in the process through making submissions and engaging in advocacy.

Following the review, each state is expected to submit a plan to implement the recommendations it has accepted.
